Foundation for Hair Restoration

Jeffrey S. Epstein, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Epstein is a Diplomate of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery, and the American Board of Otolaryngology. A Voluntary Assistant Professor at the University of Miami Department of Otolaryngology /Division of Facial Plastic Surgery, he is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His extensive training, passion for perfection, and innate aesthetic skills are combined with the most advanced surgical techniques, enabling him to provide the finest available surgical hair restoration surgery.  Unusual in the field, Dr. Epstein’s background and skills as a facial plastic surgeon brings a unique cosmetic background, that he combines with state of the art techniques.

The hair procedures that Dr. Epstein provides through his Foundation for Hair Restoration include follicular unit grafting for men and women, where he has perhaps performed more of these procedures over the past 10 years than almost any other surgeon.  His team of 18 full-time assistants, who average over 8 years of working with Dr. Epstein, help assure that every recipient sites that he personally places are filled with microscopically dissected grafts in the most careful and aesthetic fashion.  Procedures of several hundred to as many as 4,000 grafts in a single day can be performed, due to the coordinated and experienced efforts of Dr. Epstein and his outstanding team.

Using the very smallest recipient sites in the field, 0.5 mm for one hair grafts, 0.6 and 0.7 mm for two hair grafts, and 0.7 and 0.8 mm for three and four hair grafts assures the greatest possible density, least scarring, and minimal damage to any surrounding hairs.  Also, as a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Epstein uses a variety of techniques, including a modification of the trichophytic closure that he calls the HITS (hair induction through the scalp) technique to allow for hairs to actually grow through the donor site scar.

Other procedures in which Dr. Epstein specializes includes facial and eyebrow transplants, where he has accumulated the largest case experience in this very refined subspecialty.  He has lectured extensively on his facial and eyebrow transplant techniques, including writing the chapter on eyebrow restoration for THE definitive hair textbook in hair restoration.  Other areas transplanted include chest (for men and transgender female to male patients), pubic, and axillary (armpit) regions.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a regular component of Dr. Epstein’s practice.  These procedures are ideal for patients who wish to shave their head, or are young, and/or are of African ethnicity (where he has had tremendous success with these procedures).  FUE procedures of 200 to as many as 1800 or so grafts can be done in a single day.  On average, Dr. Epstein performs 3 FUE procedures weekly, as compared to 8 to 12 strip procedures a week.
For women, not only are transplants for female pattern hair loss performed.  Dr. Epstein also performs hairline advancement procedures, using both transplants, as well as the highly challenging surgical hairline advancement procedure, in which an entire hairline can be advanced by as much as 1.5 inches in a single procedure.  Also treated is scarring and hairline distortion from prior facial plastic surgery.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, Dr. Epstein is one of the most experienced hair surgeons in reparative procedures.  He has at disposal a variety of techniques, including graft removal, further grafting, graft redistribution, and scar repairs.  This is one of his most rewarding areas to work in, due to the happiness he can provide to patients who have been treated with less aesthetic or technically poor results.
A graduate of Swarthmore College, Dr. Epstein received his medical training at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He continued his training in head and neck surgery / otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat) at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, and was awarded a fellowship by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, studying under Sheldon Kabaker, M.D., a recognized leader and authority in cosmetic surgery.

The Foundation surgeons routinely teach their techniques to doctors from around the world. Here Dr. Epstein is pictured with the International Fellow from the University of Miami's Cosmetic Dermatology program, a surgeon from Singapore.
